“I was watching a TV show called Shark Tank, where people with fledgling businesses pitch their idea to investors in return to potentially receive a percentage of equity. On this particular episode, three young Korean girls stride up to present their unique dating app. This app ran on an algorithm based on a person’s Facebook friends, friends of friends, as well as hobbies, interests and how the person responds to the one daily curated match. The girls were only looking to sell a small equity stake in exchange for investor advice for $5 million, however the lead investor was so taken by the idea that he offered them the unprecedented sum of $30M for the entire idea. Without any hesitation, the girls turned down the money, saying that they knew that in a few years time, their idea will grow to a $200M plus business. These girls are either incredibly bold or incredibly foolish”, I thought. I had to see it for myself. On the other side of Miami, Roberto was watching this episode and having the same thoughts. It took many rejections, one after the other, of the algorithm daily matches until we were both almost ready to give up on the app, that we were finally matched. It was only 11 days from when the episode aired to the fateful day we were matched”.
